Reflexology
Reflexology is a healing technique originating from Asia. However, it was inscribed on the wall of an Egyptian tomb. The tomb of Ankhmahor, in the 6th Dynasty 2330 BC, the process was described there and has been in use since.
Reflexology is a gentle and effective form of therapeutic treatment applied to the bare feet and sometimes to the hands or ears.
Reflexology is considered to be a holistic healing technique that aims to treat the individual as a whole, in order to induce a state of balance and harmony in body, mind and spirit.
Reflexology is based on the belief that there are reflexes situated on areas of the feet (and hands, and ears) corresponding to all the parts of the body including major organs. The therapist stimulates and works these organs and systems through the reflexes, applying pressure to the feet with thumb and fingers.
A treatment lasts between 40 minutes and 1 hour. During the first visit, a case history is taken in order to assess where there may be possible imbalances or problem areas. The client may be seated in some form of recliner chair or similar seated (or laying) position and asked to remove shoes and socks. Once the feet have been cleansed, the treatment starts with a gentle relaxation sequence that helps to relax the client and guide the Reflexologist to any problem areas. Massage tables are also used after the foot-cleaning process.
Most people can benefit from Reflexology; it can bring relief to a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions and is suitable for all ages, including children. Once the body has been rebalanced, regular treatments can help to maintain health and general well-being.
On the whole, a Reflexology treatment is pleasant and soothing, it relaxes and at the same time stimulates the body’s own healing processes. However, each person responds to a treatment in a unique way and on occasions may experience a variety of short term reactions, for example, discomfort, minor pain or extreme relaxation, tiredness, lethargy or tearfulness.
Benefits:
Reflexology does not claim to be a ‘cure-all’ but numerous disorders have been successfully treated by this method. These disorders include migraine, sinus problems, and hormonal imbalances, breathing disorders, digestive problems, circulatory problems, back problems, tension and stress. Most people who have experienced a treatment would agree that the method can be most beneficial and is a very relaxing therapy.
